Thorsby has just received the exciting news that we are to be Axias next fibre town in Alberta. The Town entered into an access agreement late spring, but with no firm date to start. We are happy to pass along to our residents, that they made the following press release today.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 31, 2017
TO PROVE SMALL TOWNS DESERVE WORLD CLASS INTERNET CONNECTIVITY
Calgary, AB - Today, residents of Thorsby, Alberta join a number of towns across the province to proving that rural communities want competitive, top-performing connectivity. To date, many households and businesses have relied on dial-up, and after a wave of community support, they will soon be able to connect at the speed-of-light as Axia begins to roll out a fibre optic network throughout the town, attaching it to a global grid.
Once complete, residents will have access to unrestricted, speed-of-light Internet that will radically improve their quality of life, access to cloud-based services and entertainment, and will provide fuel for economic development as people and businesses are able to promote and connect to communities and markets anywhere in the world.
The fibre optic network expansion into Thorsby is part of Calgary-based Axia’s commitment to introducing competitively priced, state-of-the-art fibre optic Internet services to rural Alberta. This future-proof technology means residents will have robust network capacity and speed, eliminating online delays while offering symmetrical upload and download speeds. It also means reliable availability of IPTV, Internet phone calls and numerous other cloud based services offering feature rich options for markedly less money than existing legacy offerings.
“We’re thrilled to bring our world-class fibre infrastructure to Thorsby, Alberta. Fibre far exceeds the limitations of copper and will allow the community to leverage this transformational infrastructure as an asset for generations to come,” says Robert Price, Vice President of Enterprise and Residential Services.
“A high-speed fibre optic network would be fabulous for Thorsby, opening up opportunities for businesses and families alike. With guaranteed upload and download speeds, it has the potential to make a world of difference to our community in today’s technologically driven society,” says Christine Burke, Chief Administration Officer of Thorsby.
Axia is now investing in Fibre to the Premise infrastructure in communities across the province, made possible by Alberta SuperNet. Motivated communities have an opportunity to take advantage of this investment that will spur economic prosperity and increase the quality of life for their residents and businesses. In Alberta, Axia currently has live networks in Vulcan, Nanton, Nobleford, Barnwell, Stirling, Fort Macleod, Raymond, Magrath, and Hanna and building in Pincher Creek, and Fairview with construction beginning in Thorsby and Stavely.

Great arrival however it does not give us an expected date of arrival. I would really love to know at least an approximate date and potential cost for the service
