Arctic Spas Recreation Complex Toonie and Loonie Tossing Ceremony
Mayor Hostyn, Councillors Musson and Watson, recreation staff and CAO Donna were invited by Bry Sand Arena Specialists to a time-honoured tradition to put loonies and toonies at centre ice. This tradition gives the arena good luck.
After the ceremony, the Mayor and Councillors had lunch with Bry Sand and thanked them for all the hard work and sticking very close to schedule. This new arena floor has taken a lot of hard work, especially with tear-out. All the new brine piping system is in and pressurized, and when the ceremony took place, the floor was cement poured to centre ice. This cement pour is a proprietary blend that Bry Sand keeps confidential. They have developed it over the years, and they provide it to the concrete contractor. Each truck has only seven metres of concrete when they arrive for the pour as the “recipe” is effective for that amount. This way Bry Sand can keep integrity in the floor and not have to worry about compromising it.
As of today the entire floor has been poured and is now curing. Once that is finalized according to Bry Sand specifications, the floor will be ready for ice. Thorsby has always had great ice, and CAO Donna asked the team how will the new ice and brine system perform as compared to our other system? Bry Sand replied, “ You will be very surprised at the difference and
very excited!”
This project was a bit over one million dollars and Mayor Hostyn and CAO Donna and team thank the County of Leduc for their support and partnership in making this project come in on time, budget, and their commitment to sport in this arena. Stay tuned for a centre ice ceremony once everything is in. Thorsby, you have much to be proud of and this project just elevates our little community onto a new level.
